Yerington is a small city located in Lyon County in west-central Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,048 residents. Yerington was first known as Pizen Switch for an establishment in town that used to sell liquor that is said to have tasted like poison. Then, it was called Greenfield for its location in a beautiful green valley. Finally, the name was changed to Yerington named for Henry M. Yerington, Superintendent of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1907 and is the county seat. Yerington sits at an elevation of 4,378 feet and is home to 3 city parks and one regional park. Recreational facilities at these parks include 2 tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, a one-mile hiking trail that winds through the parks, ball fields, a soccer field and picnicking. Nearby activities include rock hounding, mountain climbing, hiking, skiing and exploring old ghost towns. Yerington is just an hour and a half to Lake Tahoe, and a 30-45 minute drive to Lahontan Reservoir, Walker Lake and Topaz Reservoir. The city also hosts several special events throughout the year, including an Annual Spring Fling, a 4th of July Celebration, the County Fair and an Annual Fall Harvest Festival.

West-central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s F., and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
