Minden
is a pretty town located in the heart of Carson Valley in the west-central corner of Nevada. It's very near the California border, at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The population of Minden is approximately 3,000. It is the county seat and is adjacent to the town of Gardnerville. The town was founded in 1906 and the campus of the Western Nevada College is located in Minden. U.S. Highway 395 runs through the town and it's also the terminus of State Route 88, which becomes California State Route 88, just west of the state line. The town of Minden is known as the premier place in the United States for soaring, and one of the top gliding spots in the world. Flights of over 990 miles have been made on sailplanes from Minden. This quiet little town is like an oasis in the middle of the Nevada desert, sitting at an elevation of 4,700 feet, with spectacular, towering Sierras surrounding it on all sides. The town got its beginnings thanks to the coming of the Virginia & Truckee Railway to the area. In the years between 1906 and 1940, the Minden Inn was a popular getaway destination for big Hollywood names such as Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Subdivisions appeared in the town during the 1950s, and growth of the town exploded in the 1970s. Today, the historic downtown hosts several special events throughout the year, including farmers markets, concerts and arts and crafts fairs. Minden is only a 20-25 minute drive from Lake Tahoe and a 45 minute drive from Reno.

Minden Weather & Climate

A distinct four-season, alpine climate describes Lake Tahoe's weather. Located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains at the 7,000-foot level, summers are generally warm and dry with cool evenings and winters are quite cold and snowy. Moderate amounts of snow are reported each year in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with amounts and intensities increasing at elevations around 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 4,000 feet snow remains on the ground for long periods of time each winter and up to 40 feet of snow can be reported in the Sierras. Highways are sometimes closed for periods of two to three days due to blowing and drifting snow. Summers are quite pleasant and mild with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Sometimes, after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become severe.
