Genoa is a historic town located in Carson Valley about 42 miles south of Reno and just 25 minutes east of Lake Tahoe. As of the 2010 census, the population was 939. Founded in 1851, it was the first settlement in what was to become Nevada. Genoa, along with the towns of Minden and Gardnerville, are the major towns of Carson Valley. The town sits at the base of the eastern slope of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. It's home to Mormon Station Memorial State Park, which commemorates the settlement of Nevada in 1851, when the first permanent trading post was established by a group of Mormon traders from Salt Lake City. Other places of interest include the Genoa Courthouse Museum, the Genoa Cemetery and the Hanging Tree. The town of Genoa also offers a variety of shops, restaurants, lodging. A walking tour is available of the historic district, which was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This little town was home to a lot of "firsts." Nevada's first hotel, newspaper and court was in Genoa. Nevada's first newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise, was founded in Genoa in 1858, although later moved to Virginia City. Another first, the Genoa Bar, was billed as Nevadas oldest thirst parlor and was patronized by Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt and Johnny Cash. It was also used for scenes in John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies. The whole village was used as the set for the 1990 movie, Misery, starring Kathy Bates. An annual festival called the Candy Dance has been held in Genoa since 1919.

Genoa Weather & Climate

A distinct four-season,  alpine climate describes Lake Tahoe's weather. Located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains at the 7,000-foot level, summers are generally warm and dry with cool evenings and winters are quite cold and snowy. Moderate amounts of snow are reported each year in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with amounts and intensities increasing at elevations around 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 4,000 feet snow remains on the ground for long periods of time each winter and up to 40 feet of snow can be reported in the Sierras. Highways are sometimes closed for periods of two to three days due to blowing and drifting snow. Summers are quite pleasant and mild with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Sometimes, after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become severe.
