Carson-City
is the capital of Nevada, located on the west-central border of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,274. Officially, it's an independent city called the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City. Most of the population resides in Eagle Valley, which lies on the eastern edge of the Carson Range, a branch of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Snow Valley Peak is the highest point within Carson City at 9, 214 feet. The city of Carson City began as a stopover for emigrants bound for California. It developed as an important city after the discovery of silver known as the Comstock Lode. It also became a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and was designated as the capital of Nevada in 1864. Today, the city limits extend west across the Sierra Nevada to the middle of Lake Tahoe at the California state line. Carson City is about 30 miles south of the city of Reno. There are several historic museums in the town, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum, the Nevada State Capitol building, and the Nevada State Museum, which features a recreated Wild West Village. Carson City is also near the incredibly beautiful recreational areas of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park, the Tahoe Rim Trail, and Washoe Lake State Park. However, there are also many neighborhood parks in town that offer picnic tables, beaches, fishing, softball and basketball courts, tennis, and volleyball. The largest park, Mills Park, is home to the narrow gauge Carson & Mills Park Railroad. There are no ski slopes located within Carson City, but it's a short drive to Heavenly Mountain Resort, Diamond Peak and Mount Rose skiing areas.

West-Central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s, and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
