Dayton is a community located in west-central Nevada, near the California border. It's a "census designated place" (CDP) with a population of 8,964 as of the 2010 census. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1849 in the heart of what is today Old Town Dayton, and the community still maintains its old, rural charm. Dayton is a short drive from Carson City and a mere 40 miles to Reno. With its ideal location, it's become a "bedroom community" for many people who live here but commute to the cities for work. Dayton has a quiet, slow pace, with the Carson River flowing through the center of the town. Things to do in the area include fishing, canoeing, rafting, swimming, boating, golf and the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe are just a short drive away. The community of Dayton claims to be Nevada's oldest settlement, although this is disputed by the town of Genoa. The town is listed as Nevada Historical Marker 7, and it served as the commercial hub for miners working in the area throughout the 1850s. Many Chinese immigrants lived in the area in the early days, and some even called the town "Chinatown." It also went by other names, until adopting the name Dayton after John Day, a local surveyor. The community also gained fame in 1961 as the setting for the John Huston film "The Misfits" starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. Attractions in Dayton include the Comstock Historic District, the monumental Odeon Hall, and a local museum located in an 1865 schoolhouse.

West-Central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s, and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
