North-Lake-Tahoe is basically the northern side of the famous mountain lake and includes the communities of Kings Beach, Incline Village and Tahoe Vista. Many consider it the "quiet" side of Lake Tahoe. In contrast, the city of South Lake Tahoe lies on the south shore of the Lake, right next door to Stateline, Nevada. The south side is where you'll find 24-hour gambling, cabaret shows, live music and dancing, shopping and fine dining. This is the hub of Lake Tahoe - the place with all the action. It's hard to determine which is best at Lake Tahoe - the scenery or the nightlife. In the casinos are big name performers, and non-stop action and excitement. Outside, Lake Tahoe is a nature lover's dream. The largest concentration of world-class ski resorts are located here, and within an hour's drive there's over 30 championship golf courses to choose from. North Lake Tahoe offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, boating, water skiing and camping. In winter, there's a wide range of ski resorts to chose from to meet your every need. North Lake Tahoe ski facilities are world renowned with steep vertical drops and long, winding trails. The Sierra Nevada peaks overlooking the blue mountain lake is nothing short of breathtaking. Other activities include taking a hot air balloon ride over the lake, or ride a paddle-wheeler out to the middle of it. Accommodations range from five star hotels to mountain chalets and cozy cabins. Lake Tahoe also has every type of restaurant to suit your taste and budget - European-style bistros, California cuisine, classic steakhouses, Chinese, Italian - even Swiss. North Lake Tahoe is a prime vacation destination - any season of the year.

North Lake Tahoe Weather & Climate

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
