Virginia-City
is a step back in time - a boom town that sprang up almost overnight when the first big silver lode was discovered in the United States in 1859. It's located in west-central Nevada near the California border. At its' peak in the late 1800s, the population of the town was well over 15,000, but as of the 2010 census, the population was 855 full-time residents. Virginia City is a tourist town with one of the largest historical districts in the U.S. As a result of the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859 Virginia City was once called the richest city in America. During the next twenty years, about 400 million dollars in silver was taken out of the ground. Most of the miners who came to Virginia City were Irish, Cornish or Asian. When the Comstock Lode ran out in 1898, the population of Virginia City declined sharply. Today, the town provides a treasure trove of historic adventures and attractions. You can go on a mine tour, see authentic mining artifacts in the museums, take a trolley tour, stop for a drink in one of the saloons, visit a historic cemetery and experience Nevada's wild, wild west as never before. Also, no visit to Virginia City is complete without a ride on board the famous Short Line of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The visitors center is located at 86 South C Street where you can purchase a discount pass that includes many of the town's most popular venues and attractions. There are also several historic bed and breakfast inns and hotels located in the town. Virginia City is only about 30 minutes from Reno and 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe.

West-Central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s, and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
