Verdi is a census-designated place on the western side of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,415 residents. Verdi is near Interstate 80 immediately adjacent to the California state line. History says the town of Verdi was named after Giuseppe Verdi by Charles Crocker, founder of the Central Pacific Railroad, when he pulled a slip of paper from a hat and read the name of the Italian opera composer in 1868. Verdi itself is a quiet town, but it's just a short drive to the casinos, entertainment, restaurants, and shopping of both Reno and Sparks. Other nearby attractions include Sparks' Victorian Square, a pedestrian-friendly district that offers open-air events. Some of these include the Sparks Hometowne Farmer's Market, Hot August Nights, Best of the West Nugget Rib Cook-off and Sparks Hometowne Christmas. Recreational activities near Verdi include kayaking, tubing and rafting, camping, and hiking. Skiing, snowboarding, sledding and all the activities and beauty of Lake Tahoe is just a short drive from Verdi.

Verdi Weather & Climate

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
