Sparks
is located just east of the city of Reno at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains in northwestern Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 90,264. It's often combined with its twin city and called "Reno-Sparks," and Lake Tahoe is less than an hour's drive away. Until the 1950s, Sparks was a sleepy little town, but as neighboring Reno grew, Sparks saw a boom as well. The city's only casino, John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino Resort, was opened in 1984. Other attractions include Victorian Square, a pedestrian-friendly district that offers open-air events. Some of these include the Sparks Hometowne Farmer's Market, Hot August Nights, Best of the West Nugget Rib Cook-off and Sparks Hometowne Christmas. The city of Sparks is also known for its parks and recreation system. It's home to a water park that has pools for kayaking, tubing and rafting, a riverbank landscaping, play structures and more. Of course, all the excitement and attractions of Reno are just a short drive away. Casinos, restaurants, museums, culture, skiing and snowboarding at Lake Tahoe - it's all easily within your reach. Sparks was named the fastest-growing city in the state of Nevada between 1999-2008. It continues to grow today and has a high quality of life that draws visitors and new residents alike.

West-Central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s, and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
