Reno
is known as "The Biggest Little City in the World," famous for its casinos and other entertainment. As of the 2010 census, the population was 225,221 people. It's the fourth largest city in the state behind Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas, but the largest outside the Las Vegas region. Reno is located in the northwestern part of the state in Washoe County. Prior to the 1950s, it was the gambling capital of the United States, but Las Vegas' rapid growth in the last part of the 20th century greatly reduced its business. However, Reno still remains one of the biggest tourist attractions in Nevada. Due to its location, it draws a lot of tourists and gamblers from the Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas in California. Several large hotel/casinos are located in Reno. One of them, the Peppermill, was chosen as the most outstanding Reno gaming/hotel property by Casino Player and Nevada Magazines. The city of Reno also hosts several special events throughout the year. They include Hot August Nights (a classic car convention), Street Vibrations (a motorcycle rally), the Great Reno Balloon Race, Cinco de Mayo, the Reno Air Races and more. Reno is also the site of several large corporation headquarters. In the wintertime, skiing and snowboarding bring a lot of tourists to Reno. There are 8 major resorts near the city, as close as 11 miles away, and the furthest being 98 miles away. Lake Tahoe, Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River are nearby, so other activities include fishing, canoeing, rafting, hiking, mountain biking and wind surfing. Other Reno attractions include Artown, the National Automobile Museum, the Nevada Museum of Art, the University of Nevada, Reno Arboretum, and much more.

West-Central Nevada has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s, and winter temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
