Fernley
is located in west-central Nevada, east of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,368. Fernley is mostly known for being home to the Reno-Fernley Raceway and the Amazon.com center. The city had its beginnings in 1904 as an agricultural community and station stop to Reno along the Southern Pacific Railroad. Workers for the fledgling Truckee-Carson Reclamation Project created by Congress in 1902 also settled around the area. In 1908, the Fernley post office opened and a public school also began operating. In 1910, the population of Fernley was 159 souls. The town slowly grew, and in the 1970s, close proximity to Interstate 80 and abundant land attracted more people to the area. Fernley was given a large boost in 1999 when Amazon.com opened a 750,000-square-foot order fulfillment center in an industrial park located on the northeast side of the city. This provided thousands of new jobs for the city and greatly stimulated the local economy. Since that time, more companies have opened facilities in the park. The city of Fernley finally incorporated on July 1, 2001. The town offers ten community parks with tennis courts, a skate park and rodeo grounds, an 18-hole golf course and the Reno/Fernley Raceway. Fernley is a 30-minute drive to historic Fort Churchill, the Buckland Station and a Pony Express station. It's also an easy drive to historic Virginia City and other ghost towns, Lake Tahoe, Lahontan Reservoir, Pyramid Lake, and Walker Lake.

West-central Nevada , near the California border, has an arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. Summer temperatures tend to be in the 90s F., and somewhat cold during the winter with temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
