Pyramid-Lake
is technically a geographic sink of the Truckee River Basin, located about 40 miles northeast of Reno. Pyramid Lake doesn't have an outlet, so water leaves only by evaporation, or sub-surface seepage. Pyramid Lake covers 125,000 acres, which makes it one of the largest natural lakes in Nevada. It's also the biggest remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan, which was a huge inland sea that once covered most of the state of Nevada. Pyramid Lake is surrounded by incredible rock formations and the color of the lake changes from shades of blue to gray, depending on the color of the sky. The lake is also part of the National Scenic Byways Program. In addition, it's the only byway in the country located entirely within a tribal reservation. Recreation at the lake includes fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking and mountain biking. An interesting note: Pyramid Lake was used as a stand-in for the Sea of Galilee in the 1965 film "The Greatest Story Ever Told." In 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama designated Pyramid Lake as the first Preserve America Tribal Community in Nevada. This initiative "encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage." Pyramid Lake is widely known as one of the most beautiful desert lakes in the world. Its fishery has also brought it worldwide fame, and contains the Lohanton Cutthroat Trout, which has lured fisherman from around the world for several decades. The lake is also the only habitat in the entire world for the Cui-ui fish, which has been around for over 2 million years.

Northwestern Nevada , in the Reno-Sparks metro area, has a steppe climate due to its low evapotranspiration. Average annual rainfall is 7.4 inches, although it varies year to year. This region also receives light to moderate snowfall, with the average being 23.8 inches. Twice as much snow is received in the nearby mountains and foothills. Most rainfall occurs in winter and early spring. Thunderstorms are possible between April and October, mostly in the mountains east of this region. Northwestern Nevada has about 300 days of sunshine per year. In addition, winds known as the Washoe Zephyr are unique to northwestern Nevada and have often been noted by American author and humorist, Mark Twain.
