Fallon
is located in Churchill County in west-central Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,600 residents. Fallon is part of the Lahontan Valley on Highway 50 (called "The Loneliest Highway in America.") about 60 miles east of Reno. Surrounded by farms and ranches and the Lahontan Valley Wetlands, Fallon is dubbed the "Oasis of Nevada." This is a largely arid, agricultural area, however, approximately 50,000 acres of pastureland is irrigated with water from the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District. The major crop of the area is alfalfa and cantaloupes. The city of Fallon offers specialty shops, antique shops, restaurants, outdoor recreation and a number of special events throughout the year. In addition, the Navy's Top Gun School is located in Fallon. Some of the special events include the Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe Festival, Tractors and Truffles Agriculture and Arts event, and Octane Fest, a "monster truck" event. Other attractions include the Grimes Point Petroglyph Trail, located about seven miles east of Fallon, adjacent to Highway 50. This one-half mile long trail features rocks and carvings as much as 8,000 years old. Grimes Point is part of a much larger archaeological complex, which includes a wide variety of caves, shelters, and other archaeological sites, on what was once a shoreline of Pleistocene Lake Lahontan.

West-central Nevada has an arid, semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. The climate in this area is warm during summer and somewhat cold during the winter with temperatures in the 40s. The warmest month of the year is July and the coldest month of the year is December. Temperature variations between night and day tend to be relatively large due to low humidity. The annual average precipitation in west-central Nevada is 5.3 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, although the wettest month is May with an average rainfall of 0.71 inches. The region of the state gets around 7-8 in of snow annually. A type of heavy fog, known as pogonip, is common in winter.
