Las-Vegas
is the largest and most populous city in the state of Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 583,756, with a total population in the entire metropolitan area being almost two million. Las Vegas is located in Clark County in the southern tip of the state. It's a major resort city known for its gambling and mega casino-hotels, nightlife, shopping and fine dining. The city bills itself as "the Entertainment Capital of the World." Also, due to its' tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment, it's gained the title of "Sin City." Las Vegas is also one of the top three leading destinations in the United States for conventions and business meetings, and one of the top tourist destinations in the entire world. Not bad for a city that wasn't even established until 1905 (it incorporated in 1911.) It's a very popular setting for television shows and major movies, and big name headliners perform regularly at the large hotels. Las Vegas is used to not only to describe the city, but the area beyond the city limits. It's especially known for the Las Vegas Strip - a 4.2 mile stretch of South Las Vegas Boulevard with a high concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip is located immediately south of the city limits and includes the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. Some of the largest hotels and casinos in the world are located on the Las Vegas Strip. Fifteen of the world's 25 largest hotels by room count are here. Las Vegas offers countless attractions. In addition to the casinos and live shows, restaurants and hotels, the city offers museums, theater, festivals, golf, and 68 city parks for outdoor recreation and relaxation.

The southeast corner of Nevada has a subtropical desert climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Extremely cold weather is rare. On occasion, however, a cold air mass reaches the area and produces prolonged cold periods. Southeast Nevada has a wide variation in day and nighttime temperatures. Even after the hottest days, nights are usually cool. June to September is very dry. Annual precipitation is around 4.5 inches, mostly falling in the wintertime. Winter daytime highs are generally 60 degrees. F., and lows in the 40s. Snow is rare in southern Nevada valleys, but common in the mountains of the region. The principal climatic features are bright sunshine, small annual precipitation, (averaging nine inches in the valleys and deserts) heavy snowfall in the higher mountains, clean, dry air, and exceptionally large daily ranges of temperature.
