Hoover-Dam
is a concrete arch-gravity dam located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. The dam was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Hoover Dam's construction was the result of a massive undertaking involving thousands of workers. Over one-hundred people lost their lives during the construction of the dam. Hoover Dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover. Starting around 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project as a "go." The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. A concrete structure the size of Hoover Dam had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The extreme hot summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties for such a huge undertaking. Nevertheless, Six Companies completed the dam more than two years ahead of schedule. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by water volume. The dam is located near Boulder City, a community originally constructed for workers on the construction project. Boulder City is about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The dams generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is also a major tourist attraction for the states of Arizona and Nevada. Almost one million people tour the dam each year. U.S. 93 ran along the dams crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened to traffic.

Hoover Dam Weather & Climate

The southeast corner of Nevada has a subtropical desert climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Extremely cold weather is rare. On occasion, however, a cold air mass reaches the area and produces prolonged cold periods. Southeast Nevada has a wide variation in day and nighttime temperatures. Even after the hottest days, nights are usually cool. June to September is very dry. Annual precipitation is around 4.5 inches, mostly falling in the wintertime. Winter daytime highs are generally 60 degrees. F., and lows in the 40s. Snow is rare in southern Nevada valleys, but common in the mountains of the region. The principal climatic features are bright sunshine, small annual precipitation, (averaging nine inches in the valleys and deserts) heavy snowfall in the higher mountains, clean, dry air, and exceptionally large daily ranges of temperature.
