Pioche
is an old silver mining town located in southeast Nevada about 180 miles from Las Vegas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,002 residents. A silver mine opened in the area in 1864, which promoted the creation of the first modern settlement in the area. This early settlement was abandoned after a series of raids from local Indian tribes. Recolonization began in 1868, and by the early 1870s, Pioche was one of the most important silver-mining towns in Nevada. Due to the remoteness of the town, Pioche gained a reputation for being one of the roughest towns in the Old West. Local lore says 72 men were killed in gunfights before the first natural death occurred in the settlement. This legend is immortalized by Boot Hill, now a landmark in the city. Pioche is Nevada Historical Marker 5. Historic buildings in town include the Million Dollar Courthouse, built in 1872, and the old Mountain View Hotel, built in 1875. The hotel served many traveling dignitaries, including President Herbert Hoover. Other attractions include the abandoned aerial tramway from the mining days. The aerial tramway stretched over parts of the town, and carried buckets of ore from the mines to the Godbe Mill during the 1920s and 1930s. Special events in Pioche include a Labor Day weekend festival that includes fireworks, history-based theater and mining car filling contests called mucking events. In December, the town of Pioche holds a public Christmas tree lighting.

The southeastern region of Nevada has an arid, subtropical desert climate that is sunny and dry. The southern third of the state is within the Mojave Desert, which has very hot summers and mild winters, with cool to chilly nights, due to temperature inversion. Daytime temperatures in summer sometimes rise as high as 125 degrees F. Winters in the northern part of the state are longer and colder than southern Nevada, where winter tends to be short and mild. Southeastern Nevada is the driest region in the United States, with an average rainfall of around 4.5 inches. Rain mostly falls in the winter months, with March being the wettest month.
