Panaca
is a small community located in southeastern Nevada near the border of Utah. As of the 2010 census, the population was 963 residents. It sits at an elevation of 4,729 feet. Panaca was founded in 1864, making it Nevada's first permanent settlement. It was founded as a Mormon colony and was originally part of Washington County, Utah. After the shifting of congressional boundaries in 1866, Panaca became part of Nevada. It's the only municipality in the state that prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages, and the only place besides Boulder City that prohibits gambling. Coal ovens in Panaca once produced charcoal for the smelters in nearby Bullionville (which is now a ghost town.) Today, the town's economy is mainly agricultural. The town includes several places that have Nevada Historical Markers, including Panaca Spring, the Panaca Mercantile Store and the Panaca Ward Chapel. It's also near Cathedral Gorge State Park, a 1,608-acre park that is one of the four original Nevada State Parks established in 1935. Panaca hosts Pioneer Day in July with events that include a parade, arts and crafts, games and races and a community dinner. This festival coincides with the Utah holiday that commemorates the arrival of the Mormon pioneers into Salt Lake Valley.

The southeastern region of Nevada has an arid, subtropical desert climate that is sunny and dry. The southern third of the state is within the Mojave Desert, which has very hot summers and mild winters, with cool to chilly nights, due to temperature inversion. Daytime temperatures in summer sometimes rise as high as 125 degrees F. Winters in the northern part of the state are longer and colder than southern Nevada, where winter tends to be short and mild. Southeastern Nevada is the driest region in the United States, with an average rainfall of around 4.5 inches. Rain mostly falls in the winter months, with March being the wettest month.
