Caliente
is a small town in Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,130 full-time residents. The town sits at an elevation of 4,300 feet and was named after a hot springs located nearby. Caliente has also been known by the names of Calientes and Culverwell. The town of Caliente began as a railroad town with the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1905. In 1923, the construction of a train depot in the Spanish Mission style was built in Caliente. The population of the town grew to over 5,000, but has steadily declined over the decades. Today the historic depot houses the city offices, an art gallery, library and a lovely mural graces the old Amtrak waiting room. Services in town include a few restaurants and motels, gas stations, variety stores and a small casino. The U.S. Department of the Interior-Bureau of Land Management has an office in Caliente that offers visitor information for travelers. Attractions in town include three city parks that offer hiking trails, campgrounds, picnic facilities, a playground, swimming pool and volleyball courts. Caliente is a short drive to some of Nevada's most beautiful spots; Rainbow Canyon, Beaver Dam, Cathedral Gorge, Spring Valley and Echo Canyon. The town is also home to an annual Fourth of July Celebration that draws visitors from all around the area. It features dancing, games, lots of good food and a spectacular fireworks display come nightfall.

The southeastern region of Nevada has an arid, subtropical desert climate that is sunny and dry. The southern third of the state is within the Mojave Desert, which has very hot summers and mild winters, with cool to chilly nights, due to temperature inversion. Daytime temperatures in summer sometimes rise as high as 125 degrees F. Winters in the northern part of the state are longer and colder than southern Nevada, where winter tends to be short and mild. Southeastern Nevada is the driest region in the United States, with an average rainfall of around 4.5 inches. Rain mostly falls in the winter months, with March being the wettest month.
