Amargosa-Valley
is an unincorporated community located in Nye County in south-central Nevada. The community is named for the Amargosa River, which goes through the valley on its way to its terminus in Death Valley, California. Of course, like most desert rivers, the 200-mile long river is a dry bed, except when rare rainfalls fill the desert washes. There is a 20-mile stretch near Shoshone, California, where it flows perennially. The populated area of Amargosa Valley is mostly between U.S. 95 to the north and the California border to the south. Indeed, some of the residential streets in the community cross over into the state of California. Death Valley National Park extends into Nevada (from California) about 30 miles northwest of Amargosa Valley. Nicknames for Amargosa Valley include "Valley of Faith," and "The Jewel of Nye County." It's home to several attractions, including Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, which is 23,000 acres of spring-fed wetlands. The wetlands contain several fish species and one plant species listed on the endangered species, and provides habitat for at least 24 plants and animals that are not found anyplace else in the world. Big Dune is a formation of sand dunes that crest approximately 300 feet above Amargosa Valley. The dune formation is open to both motorized and non-motorized recreational use. The valley is also home to Amargosa Days each May. This 3-day celebration includes lots of good food, a parade, arts and crafts, kids games, a water slide, antique car show, live music, BBQ dinner and raffle prizes.

Amargosa Valley Weather & Climate
Central Nevada is largely desert with a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's common for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. The highest ever recorded temperature was 125 degrees F. in Laughlin on Jun 29, 1994. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada. The average annual rainfall is around 7 inches. Humidity is generally so low that the high summer temperatures are less uncomfortable in Nevada than in other more humid states. In the central region, freezes begin in autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
