Tonopah is a historic city located in Nye County halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. It sits at the junction of U.S. Routes 6 and 95. As of the 2010 census, the population of Tonopah was 2,478. Established around 1900, there is a lot of history is this small city that became known as the "Queen of the Silver Camps." It began when a prospector named Jim Butler camped in the area and his mule wandered away. When Butler found the critter, he noticed an outcropping that appeared to be heavily laced with silver. He took several samples and this was the beginning of what was to become the site of the second-richest silver strike in the history of Nevada. The mines in the Tonopah district went on to produce in excess of five million tons of ore. At todays market the precious metals produced would be valued in excess of $1,200,000,000! You can experience some of the history at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. This park has been named "Best Museum in Rural Nevada" for six consecutive years, 2002 through 2007. It's located on the site of the original mining claims that started the rush to the area and covers more than 100 acres. This rich history is brought to life through preserved and restored equipment and buildings, historic exhibits, video presentations and a self-guided tour. Other attractions in Tonopah include the Central Nevada Museum, the Tonopah Star Trails and several city parks.
