Goldfield
is a "semi-ghost town" located in southwest Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 268 full-time residents. Goldfield sits along U.S. Route 95, about 240 miles southeast of Carson City. The town of Goldfield has a very interesting history, as do many of the old-west ghost towns of yesteryear. But, Goldfield was made famous by none other than Earp Brothers - Wyatt and Virgil, following their famous gunfight at the Ok Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. It's said that Wyatt arrived in Goldfield in 1904 and wrote his brother to join him "where money was flowing like wine." Virgil moved to Goldfield and was hired as deputy sheriff in January 1905. In April of that year, he died of pneumonia, and Wyatt Earp left Goldfield shortly afterwards. Founded in 1902, Goldfield became a boomtown and by 1906 it was producing 11 million dollars in gold. By 1912, gold production had dropped to 5 million. People began to leave the town, and a fire in 1923 nearly destroyed the town. Many buildings survived, however, and are still standing today, most notably the Goldfield Hotel, the old school and the Consolidated Mines Building. Many of the buildings are empty, but are privately owned and many of the owners have plans to renovate. The town also hosts the Goldfield Days Festival each August with parades, food, historical displays and a land auction.
