Mesquite is located in Clark County in southern Nevada. It lies adjacent to the Arizona border about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mesquite was 15,276 residents. The town is situated in the Virgin River Valley and is home to a growing number of retirees. Traditionally, it's been a stopping point for those traveling along I-15 between Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The town of Mesquite has several casino resorts and golf courses. The 9 public golf courses set in the scenic desert draws golfers from all over the country. Mesquite Airport offers skydiving and provides facilities for general aviation. It's also the site of the annual RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. Other attractions include the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum, which has exhibits about the area pioneers and local history. The museum, which was built in 1940, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Mesquite was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1880, who first named it Mesquite Flat. The community experienced bad times as it was flooded out twice, but finally became firmly established on the third attempt. The name was later shortened to Mesquite and the city was incorporated in 1984. In the 1990s more casinos opened and by the mid-2000s, Mesquite was one of the fastest-growing towns in the United States.

Mesquite Weather & Climate

The southernmost point of Nevada has a subtropical desert climate. Summers are long and hot and winters short and mild. Extremely cold weather is rare, because the mountains east and north of the State act as a barrier to the cold continental arctic air masses. On occasion, however, a cold air mass reaches the area and produces prolonged cold waves. This region has a wide variation in day and night temperatures, due to strong surface heating during the day and rapid nighttime cooling. Even after the hottest days, nights are usually cool. June to September is very dry. Annual precipitation is around 4.5 inches, mostly falling in the wintertime. Winters are very mild, often with daytime highs of 60 degrees. F., and lows in the 40s. Snow is rare in southern Nevada valleys, but common in the mountains of the region.
