Charleston
, or Mount Charleston, is a small, unincorporated town (or "census-designated place") located in Clark County, Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population of Charleston was 257 full-time residents. Clark County is within the southern tip of the state, and the town of Charleston is northwest of Las Vegas. The village was named for Mount Charleston, which is the highest point in the area. The town itself is located in a high mountain valley of the Spring Mountains, which is known for its hiking trails and rustic hotel/lodge. It sits at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet, so temperatures are generally much lower than in Las Vegas, which has an elevation of about 2,000 feet. Thus, the town of Mount Charleston is a popular place for Las Vegans to escape the heat. Most of the area of the Spring Mountains is owned by the United States Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. It's within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area offers an abundance of recreational activities, including hiking, mountain biking, skiing and picnicking. The popular Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is visited by over one million people each year. The area showcases a set of large red rock formations; a set of sandstone peaks and walls called the Keystone Thrust. The walls are up to 3,000 feet high, which makes them popular for hiking and rock climbing.

Central Nevada is largely desert with a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's common for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada. The average annual rainfall is around 7 inches. Humidity is generally so low that the high summer temperatures are less uncomfortable in Nevada than in other more humid states. In the central region, freezes begin in autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
