West-Wendover
is located in Elko County in the northeast corner of Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,410. West Wendover is at the western edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert and adjacent to its sister city of Wendover, Utah. As of 2014, West Wendover was home to five main casinos. West Wendover began in the 1930s and 1940s when gambling became legalized in the State of Nevada. William Bill Smith founded a small cobblestone service station that provided a rest stop to weary travelers crossing the desert of western Utah and eastern Nevada. Today this facility is known as the Wendover Nugget. Through the 1970s and 1980s West Wendover continued to grow with more casinos, hotels, restaurants and other businesses and a golf course coming to town. West Wendover thrived and became a lucrative gambling town with much to offer both tourists and residents. Its casinos are top ranked and also offer fine dining and top name entertainment. Other things to do in the West Wendover area include visiting historical sites, Danger Cave, the Bonneville Salt Flats, and Ancient Lake Bonneville. Also, the Wendover Field Bomber Training Base and Juke Box Cave, where military men and women during World War II would hold all night parties and dances. Recreational activities include biking, hiking, horseback riding and four-wheeling in off-road areas.

Northeast Nevada has a semi arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. There is an unusually wide variation in daytime and nighttime temperatures. This is due to strong surface heating during the day and rapid nighttime cooling because of the dry air. Even after the hottest days, the nights are usually cool. Summer temperatures are generally in the 90s. Sometimes they soar above 100° F, but more frequently in the south. Humidity is usually very low. Freezes begin early in the autumn and continues until late in the spring. The freeze-free season varies from less than 70 days in the northeast to about 140 days in the west and south-central areas, to over 225 in the south.
