Round-Mountain is a small community located in Nye County in south-central Nevada. The population is around 750 people. The town of Round Mountain is best known for being the site of the Round Mountain Gold Mine. This large, open pit, heap-leach gold mine is owned half by Kinross Gold Corporation and half by Barrick Gold Corporation. The original town of Round Mountain is pretty much a ghost town, but there is much to see in the area, as many of the original buildings are still standing. Present-day mining has led to the development of a new town called Hadley, which is located in the valley below Round Mountain. Gold was first discovered at Round Mountain in 1905 and by the next year, there was a population in the area of 400. By 1907, there were daily stages running from Round Mountain to the town of Tonopah. The town contained saloons, general stores, brokerage agencies, a library and a school, banks, hotels and a hospital. New surface operations on the side of Round Mountain began in 1970 and continue to this day. Unfortunately, most of the mountain itself has been carved away as the open pit mining continually expands. Parts of the main ore body are under the town of Round Mountain, and eventually the town will be either moved or razed so that mining can continue.

Round Mountain Weather & Climate

Central Nevada is largely desert with a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's common for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. The highest ever recorded temperature was 125 degrees F. in Laughlin on Jun 29, 1994. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada. The average annual rainfall is around 7 inches. Humidity is generally so low that the high summer temperatures are less uncomfortable in Nevada than in other more humid states. In the central region, freezes begin in autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
