Rachel is a small, remote community located in south-central Nevada. The population is 98 full-time residents. Rachel is about 100 miles north of Las Vegas along Nevada Highway 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. This tiny community is the closest populated-place to Nellis Air Force Base and Area 51, so it's well-known by UFO and aviation enthusiasts. The town consists of a 12-room motel and an alien-themed restaurant and bar. Rachel has been dubbed the "UFO Capital of the World," due to its proximity to Area 51, which has always been shrouded in secrecy. The current air force base's purpose is publicly unknown; but historical evidence points to it being used for development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. The secrecy around the base has made it the subject of conspiracy theories and myths about UFOs being kept there. The truth is: all research and happenings at Area 51 are top secret. Several unpaved roads lead from Highway 375 across the terrain to the boundary of Area 51, about 27 miles from Rachel. The town was named after Rachel Jones, the first baby born in the valley. Each May, Rachel Day is celebrated with a parade. Most of the residents of the area are either retired, work at the restaurant/inn, or work at nearby alfalfa farms. A few people work at the Tonopah Test Range (TTR) or in Area 51, but, of course, those who really do work there are not allowed to talk about it. With all the secrecy, it's little wonder that so many mysterious stories have cropped up about the area. There is a public phone outside the town's restaurant, but you need a calling card to use it.

Rachel Weather & Climate

South-central Nevada has an arid climate with hot summers and cool winters. Due to the very low humidity, there is a wide range in day and nighttime temperatures. Therefore, nights are usually cool, even in midsummer. The record high temperature in this region was 104 °F on July 18, 1960, and the record low was minus 15 °F on January 24, 1937. Average annual precipitation is 5.09 inches, with an average of 37 days with measurable precipitation. Average annual snowfall is 13.0 inches. If traveling, keep in mind that much more snowfall is received in the mountains, so it's best to check ahead for road conditions. Other than summertime heat, extreme weather in south-central Nevada is rare. Thunderstorms are infrequent, tornadoes are rare, and winds are generally light.
