McDermitt is a small, secluded unincorporated community in Humboldt County, Nevada. It straddles the Nevada/Oregon border. As of the 2010 census, the population was 513 residents. McDermitts economy has historically been based on mining, ranching, and farming, although the last mining operation closed in 1990, resulting in a steady decline in population. Seventy-five percent of the residents were of the American Indian tribe, Northern Paiute. Points of interest in McDermitt include the historical White Horse Inn. The state line ran right through inn, which was once a saloon, hotel and brothel. When it was open, customers could order and pay for their food in Oregon, thus avoiding the Nevada state sales tax. McDermitt is near another tiny community called Denio/Denio Junction at the junction of SR 140 and SR 292. Denio Junction is home to a motel that offers gas, food and groceries. Area attractions include an opal mine, approximately 35 miles away. The mine/park offers RV camping and cabins, a gift shop and free digging for opals. Mining is available May through October, weather permitting, and no reservations are necessary. Other things to do nearby include fishing, hunting, rock hounding and visiting the area hot springs.

McDermitt Weather & Climate

Northwestern Nevada, on the Oregon border,  has a varied climate, depending on elevation and proximity to the mountains. Generally, it's classified as an arid, desert climate with lots of sunshine and low humidity. Days are usually sunny and clear with cool nights year round. Most areas of Nevada see over 300 days of sunshine each year. Precipitation comes mostly in the form of rain or snow, but is generally less than twelve inches per year. If it snows, it often melts off during the day due to the high levels of sunshine. Surface winds prevail out of the south and southeast from October to February, then from west to northwest in the remaining months. Wind speeds average from 5 to 7 mph most months.
