Lovelock is located in northern Nevada's Pershing County. It is the only incorporated city in the county. The town began as a stop for settlers on their way to California and later a train depot was built here. Today, the town's economy is primarily based on tourism and employment of the prison located there of the same name. Lovelock lies in the Humboldt River Basin, near the terminus of the river. Attractions include the Lovelock Native Cave, located about twenty miles outside of town. The horseshoe-shaped cave is about 35 feet wide and 150 feet long. The cave is where the ancient Northern Paiute Indian natives deposited duck decoys and other artifacts. Historic buildings in town include the wooden 1886 Grace Methodist Church, the Victorian Marzen House, built in 1874, the Longhorn Bar, and the old railroad depot. Special events in Lovelock include the I.D.E.S. Portuguese festival in May and the annual Frontier Days weekend in July. There's also hot air balloon races and the Lovelock Street Fever Car Show. A more recent attraction in Lovelock that began on Valentine's Day in 2005 is the Lovers Lock Plaza. This shaded area at the back of the Court House is where couples come to symbolize their love by attaching a padlock to an "endless chain," much like the similar practice on a bridge in Paris, France.

Annual precipitation has ranged from 1.55 inches in 1947 to 13.23 inches in 1983. This region receives light to moderate snowfall in the winter. Average annual snowfall is 23.8 inches. Twice as much snow is received in the nearby mountains and foothills. Most rainfall occurs in winter and early spring. Thunderstorms are possible between April and October, mostly in the mountains to the east of this region. Northwestern Nevada has about 300 days of sunshine per year. In addition, this region is windy throughout the year. Winds known as the Washoe Zephyr are unique to northwestern Nevada and have often been noted by American author and humorist, Mark Twain.
