Gabbs
is a tiny, unincorporated community (census-designated place) located in Nye County in central Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population of Gabbs was 269 people. The town of Gabbs was created in 1941 as a "company town" for Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI), a magnesium production plant in the area. The original plant closed in 1944, but another opened in 1955. The population of the town was 796 by 1960. In 1982, half of the workers of the new plant were laid off and the population once again declined. In 2001, the town lost its incorporated status. Today, Gabbs is a bedroom community of homes, a few stores and a high school. It's part of Nye County, which is home to the Amargosa Valley. Nearby attractions include Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, a 23,000-acre spring-fed wetlands. Big Dune is a formation of sand dunes that crest 300-feet above Amargosa Valley, that is open to both motorized and non-motorized recreational use. The valley is also home to Amargosa Days, a 3-day celebration in May that offers a parade, arts and crafts fair, an antique car show, live music, BBQ dinner and raffle prizes.

Central Nevada has a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's not uncommon for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada, with the average annual rainfall around 7 inches. Humidity is so low that the high summer temperatures are not that uncomfortable. Freezes begin in late autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
