Eureka is a small community located in central Nevada in the middle of a rather secluded area. It's a "census-designated place," and although small, it's by far the largest community in Eureka County. The town of Eureka serves as the county seat, and the other two towns that make up Eureka County are Beowawe and Crescent Valley. The nearest town to Eureka is Duckwater, Nevada, which is about 60 miles to the south. Eureka sits along the Lincoln Highway (U.S. Route 50) which stretches east to west and is nicknamed "The Loneliest Road in America." The closest towns to Eureka along this highway are Ely (77 miles to the east,) and Austin (71 miles to the west.) Eureka was first settled in 1864 when prospectors discovered rock nearby containing a silver-lead ore. Lead mining became the town's economic mainstay. Eventually, the Eureka area became the second largest mining area in Nevada, behind the Comstock Lode. The town boomed with the population reaching more than 10,000 by 1878. However, as mining declined in following years, so did the population. Attractions in the town include the Eureka Opera House, built in 1880, and restored in 1993. Other places of interest include Raine's Market and Wildlife Museum (c. 1887), the Jackson House Hotel (c. 1877) and the Eureka Fire Department Museum. The city also offers three city parks, and a huge 4th of July Celebration complete with a parade and fireworks.

Eureka Weather & Climate

Central Nevada is largely desert with a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's common for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada. The average annual rainfall is around 7 inches. Humidity is generally so low that the high summer temperatures are less uncomfortable in Nevada than in other more humid states. In the central region, freezes begin in autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
