Ely is a historic town located in White Pine County in east-central Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,255. The community was founded as a stagecoach stop along the Pony Express and Central Overland Route. In 1906, it became a mining town with the discovery of copper in the region. A portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad to Ely is preserved as a Heritage Railroad by the Nevada Northern Railway and it's also home to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum. The museum features a working steam engine/passenger train known as the Ghost Train of Old Ely. The train travels the old tracks from Ely to the Robinson mining district. Other attractions in town include the historic, six-story Hotel Nevada, a popular tourist stop, known for its' gaming and dining as well as lodging. It was first opened in 1929 and was the tallest building in Nevada well into the 1940s. More than twenty murals and sculptures can be found in downtown Ely, created by artists from all over the world that were commissioned to create images of area history. There is also a historical village consisting of a general store and several "shotgun houses" which display the history of the ethnic groups that worked for the railroad and the mine. Nearby tourist attractions include the Great Basin National Park, Cave Lake State Park, Stella Lake, Cave Lake and Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. In addition, the U.S. Department of the Interior operates an area that supports an elk herd south of town. The Ely Elk Viewing Area offers visitors an opportunity to see the amazing creatures up close.
