Elko
is located in northeast Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,297. The city of Elko straddles the Humboldt River, and is the principle city in a micropolitan area that has a combined population of around 48,000. Elko is the largest city for over 130 miles in all directions, thus its motto The Heart of Northeast Nevada. The town is home to Great Basin College, and also the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office that serves most of southern and central Nevada. Elko is a fine example of the "Great American West," a land that stretches as far as your eyes can see and is home to other interesting places with names like Battle Mountain, Lovelock and Jackpot. The rugged Ruby Mountains surround the town and offer beautiful mountains vistas in all directions. Elko is home to a Convention Center, a variety of restaurants, coffee bars, hotels, museums, casinos, shopping and other entertainment. The Laurena Moren Theatre is housed within the Elko Convention Center and is the venue for a variety of performances. Special events in Elko include the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, a tradition for over 27 years. This festival is held each January and is a week-long celebration of life in the rural west and features poetry, music, stories, good food and more. Every July, Elko is host to the National Basque Festival, with a strongman competition, a running of the bulls, traditional food and wine, basque dancing and more.

Elko Weather & Climate

Northeast Nevada has a semi arid climate. The principal climatic features are bright sunshine, small annual precipitation, (averaging nine inches in the valleys and deserts) heavy snowfall in the higher mountains, clean, dry air, and exceptionally large daily ranges of temperature. This is due to strong surface heating during the day and rapid nighttime cooling because of the dry air. Even after the hottest days, the nights are usually cool. Summer temperatures are generally in the 90s. Sometimes they soar above 100° F, but more frequently in the south. Humidity is usually very low. Freezes begin early in the autumn and continues until late in the spring. The freeze-free season varies from less than 70 days in the northeast to about 140 days in the west and south-central areas, to over 225 in the south.
