Denio is a small community, or census-designated place, located in northern Nevada on the Oregon state line. As of the 2010 census, the population was 47 residents. There is a portion of development that extends into the state of Oregon that is also considered part of Denio. The Nevada portion is in Humboldt County, Nevada, and the Oregon portion is in Harney County, Oregon. Denio includes a post office, a community center, a library and the Diamond Inn Bar. There is also a school (kindergarten through 8th grade) operated by the Humboldt County School District in the community. Denio Junction is located about two miles south of the community of Denio at the junction of SR 140 and SR 292. Denio Junction is home to a motel that also offers gas, food and groceries. There is also a two-runway graded airstrip located at Denio Junction. Obviously, this is a very secluded area, and for those looking for a more rustic, rural Nevada experience. Area attractions include an opal mine, approximately 35 miles from Denio. The mine/park offers RV camping and cabins, a gift shop and free digging for opals. Mining is available May through October, weather permitting, and no reservations are necessary. Whatever you find, you keep! Other things to do nearby include fishing, hunting, rock hounding and visiting the area hot springs.
