Battle-Mountain
is a town located on Interstate 80 in central Nevada. The town is an unincorporated community, but even without legal status as a municipality, it still functions as the county seat of Lander County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Battle Mountains was 3,635. The town's economy is based on gold mining and legalized gaming. Battle Mountain is considered a "Gateway to America's Outback," and offers a lot of outdoor adventure and desert country to explore. Battle Mountain is known for hosting annual bike races. It's the perfect place, with its' stretch of flat highway just outside of town. It's home to the event known as the "World Human Powered Speed Challenge." According to Wikipedia: "During 2009, a Canadian man and a French woman set world bicycle speed records at the annual event in northeastern Nevada. Sam Whittingham and Barbara Buatois pedaled recumbent bikes to the records on Nevada Route 305 near Battle Mountain." Also, Battle Mountain is home to the annual "Pony Express," the longest open road race in the U.S., averaging a total of 130 miles. This race consists of cars from the 1960s-era muscle cars to modern sports cars. Other things to do in the area include hiking, mountain biking, fishing and camping. Battle Mountain is approximately 220 miles northeast of Reno.

Battle Mountain Weather & Climate
North-Central Nevada has an semi-arid climate. This region is located at the confluence of two rivers in a valley between the Shoshane Mountains to the southeast, Battle Mountain to the southwest and the Sheep Creek Range to the north. Summers are short and hot and winters are long and cold. Snowfall is usually heavy in the mountains, particularly in the north. Twenty-four hour snowfalls can amount to over 45 inches, while seasonal totals of over 300 inches have been recorded. Flooding can also be caused by a combination of warm rains and melting snow, especially in the western section. Heavy summer thunderstorms occasionally cause flooding of local streams, but they usually occur in sparsely settled mountainous areas and are seldom destructive. These storms, locally termed cloudbursts, may bring as much rain in a few hours as would normally fall in several months.
