Austin is a small community located in central Nevada's Lander County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 192. The community is the headquarters of the federally recognized Yomba Shoshone Tribe of the Yomba Reservation. The community, which is located at an elevation of 6,605 feet, is considered a "living ghost town." Founded in 1863, it's a fine example of an early Nevada mining town. By the summer of the year of its founding, the town had a population of over 10,000. It soon became the county seat, and in 1880, the Nevada Central Railroad was built to connect Austin with the transcontinental railroad at Battle Mountain. However, almost as quickly as it had started, the town of Austin began to decline when the silver boom ended in the late 1880s. Mining has continued in the area off and on over the years, and high quality turquoise is still mined in the area in small quantities. Several shops that make jewelry from the local turquoise are located in Austin. The community contains four churches; three of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The International Hotel is also an Austin landmark. It still serves meals and drinks, but doesn't rent out rooms. The International Hotel is the oldest hotel in the state of Nevada. Other attractions include Stokes Castle, a 3-story, stone, tower-type home built in 1897 by Anson Phelps Stokes. About 15 miles outside of town is a cluster of natural hot springs, and the Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area is found about 24 miles east of Austin.

Austin Weather & Climate

Central Nevada is largely desert with a semiarid climate. Much of it is located within the Great Basin, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the western edge and the Mojave Desert to the south. Central Nevada is one of the driest regions in the United States, with hot summers and cold winters. It's common for summer daytime temperatures to soar above 100 degrees F. Precipitation is scarce in central Nevada. The average annual rainfall is around 7 inches. Humidity is generally so low that the high summer temperatures are less uncomfortable in Nevada than in other more humid states. In the central region, freezes begin in autumn and continue until late spring. Snowfall is common in the mountainous regions, especially in the north.
